Most oboe teaching is based on personal experience and the concept that “if it works – use it”. This is fine, because many times it does indeed work. But there is no universal foundation that explains WHY or HOW it works and no universal explanation for why this way of playing or the other is preferable. It is all based on: “I do it, it works – so you do it too”. This has left many a student confused and perplexed, as sometimes – it didn’t work for them.
There was a need for research that lays universal principles, based on objective scientific grounds. That explains the complexity of oboe playing, discusses the different possible solutions and shows their advantages and disadvantages. Then choses from them the best one – for everyone and for every changing situation.
When studying and researching the difficulties that playing the oboe poses, I have chosen a scientific approach. I examined the two main elements that make up oboe playing: breathing and reed making in a systematic manner, following the laws of physics.
This has enabled me to reach objective results and universal principles, that apply to all oboe playing styles and reed-making styles.
Refer to the Breathing and Reed Making pages for detailed explanations.
