Tip of the Day

Open Reeds?

If your reeds are too open – maybe you’re tying them too short.

Always tie the reeds as long as they want to – at the point where they close nicely. But not shorter than that.

If that doesn’t help – try a narrower shape. Especially narrower in the lower part of the reed, near the staple & String.

Opening depends more on shape and tying than it does on gouging.

Know that annoying legato D-G? The one that often cracks?
Well, open your lower jaw as you hit the low G. It will not crack!

And another little trick: lift the first finger of the left hand while you play D, then press it only when you play G.

Never Cut your reed if…

1. The reed is too resistant

2. The reed is too open

3. The flow of vibrations is not smooth
